The Scientists’ Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty is an international network of diverse, independent scientific and technical experts seeking to contribute with summaries and interpretations of scientific knowledge to decision makers and the public involved in the negotiations towards a global agreement to end plastic pollution.
Coalition members collaborate within various thematic working groups (WGs) to consolidate knowledge and create accessible science-based resources that support stakeholders and negotiators. Upon requests from governments and international organizations, a WG can also provide specific feedback and expert insights on specific matters.
WGs are inclusive and seek to ensure global representation and balance across age, gender and geographic location. The Secretariat and Steering Committee actively support group members and co-leads to broaden membership.
WGs are coordinated by two co-leads elected by the working group members. The co-leads must both be core members of the Coalition, and their role is to coordinate the work within the group and ensure progress and alignment with other WGs. The WGs themselves are free to determine their topics of investigation and types of outputs.

Members of the Scientists’ Coalition are contributing to the process in a voluntary manner with no dedicated funding.

Members of the Scientists’ Coalition are independent scientists actively conducting and publishing research with relevance to plastic pollution.
Members have signed the Scientists’ Declaration on the Need for Governance of Plastics Throughout their Lifecycles, and have declared all potential conflicts of interest. No member can be personally remunerated nor directly benefit financially from the plastics industry, or associated industries or organizations.
The Scientists’ Coalition is a fully independent body. All Coalition members contribute in a voluntary manner with no dedicated funding.
Limited operating costs for the Secretariat, Coordinators, and infrastructure expenses have been covered thanks to generous donations and grants from the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation, the Clare Foundation, and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (grant no. QZA-21/0283).
