Membership

Membership of the Scientists’ Coalition is open to independent scientists who are actively researching and publishing on plastics pollution and who are free of conflicts of interest. See the Coalition’s conflicts of interest and transparency policy.

Current Members

The Scientists’ Coalition currently has over 450 members from 70+ different countries, covering a broad range of expertise across the full plastics life cycle.

All members of the Scientists’ Coalition have endorsed the Scientists’ Declaration and proved a track record of working on plastics pollution. As subject matter experts, members are organized into thematic working groups that collaborate to craft useful resources summarizing the latest scientific evidence on plastic pollution and approaches to address it.

Want to Become a Member?

The Coalition is always welcoming new scientists from around the world who want to offer their expertise to treaty negotiators toward evidence-based decision making for a global plastics treaty that will end plastic pollution. To be eligible to become a member, you must publicly endorse the Scientists’ Declaration (see below), be actively involved in plastic pollution research, and complete our review process to identify any potential conflicts of interest. You can download and read the Scientists’ Declaration in six different languages further below on this page.

To join the Coalition, please fill out and submit the membership application form linked below (a Google Form will open in a new window). Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis by a committee of volunteer members. Please be patient while we review your application. Our Secretariat will contact you as soon as there is an update to share.

Depending on your current affiliation, there are two categories of membership you can receive:

Core members: Independent scientists affiliated with, or working in, independent academic or other research institutions, and actively conducting and publishing research on plastic pollution. These members may serve as working group leads, Steering Committee members, officially co-author Coalition outputs, and speak on behalf of the Coalition at approved events and in the media.
Observer members: Academically trained scientists who are actively researching and publishing on plastic pollution but who may not currently be working for an independent academic or research institute. Observer members may be affiliated with, or working for a non-governmental organization working in the public interest. PhD candidates with documented research on plastic pollution, who have not yet published their first peer-reviewed article can also participate as observer members. Our observer members are highly valued members of the Coalition for their often unique sets of skills, expertise, experiences, and perspectives. Observer members actively participate in full member Coalition meetings and working group discussions, and regularly review working group outputs. Observer members may not, however, edit nor author Coalition outputs, nor serve as working group leads, Steering Committee members, nor represent or speak on behalf of the Coalition.

Scientists' Declaration

All Coalition members have publicly endorsed the Scientists’ Declaration that outlines the need for governance of plastics throughout their full life cycles. The Declaration is available for download in six different languages.
