The Scientists’ Coalition have developed a response to the “Aid to Negotiations (AtN) by the Chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment” based on the scientific evidence.
The AtN does not offer opportunities for member states to find common ground on the key elements the independent science finds critical to effectively ending global plastic pollution in Bangkok: binding obligations for upstream, hazard-based, precautionary and preventative provisions that incentivize and assure transparency, essentiality, safety, and sustainability across the full lifecycle and that are guided by the waste hierarchy.
