Members of the Scientists’ Coalition were present at the One Health Summit in Lyon, France, today to deliver a clear message: The independent scientific evidence shows that plastics pose multiple, interlinked, and cascading threats to human, animal, and environmental health at the heart of the One Health concept.
To protect health, there is an urgent need to adopt an effective Global Plastics Treaty to end plastic pollution across the full life cycle of plastics. Reducing plastic production and consumption, better regulating chemicals used in plastics, incentivizing repair and reuse systems, and enabling material diversification and innovation are crucial to foster a safer, more efficient, and circular economy for plastics.
To be effective, these measures should be guided by evidence-based criteria defined by independent science, and they should aim for a just and equitable transition.
